Implementing eco-friendly practices will ultimately improve the health of customers and the environment. Here are some of the ways in which I feel the restaurant business can integrate sustainability into their business strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>i) Go Green on Food<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Zero-waste cooking:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is one of the top trends for 2019, according to one of the latest culinary forecasts. In the past two years, the issue of food waste has really entered people\u2019s consciousness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restaurants can come up with dishes made from ingredients that would otherwise be wasted like vegetables or herb trimmings, coffee grinds etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Use a Digital Inventory Management Tool: <\/b>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o reduce food waste, most environmentally friendly restaurant owners rely on the latest tech. This software sends alerts to your smartphone when inventory is nearing expiration. You also get a real-time look at inventory so you don\u2019t over-order.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Source &amp; use local produce<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It requires less transport and has a smaller carbon footprint. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many consumers consider \u201clocal food\u201d to be a sustainable choice so when you can, serve organic food that&#8217;s locally sourced at your restaurant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use \u201c<\/span><b>natural ingredients<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and also \u201c<\/span><b>Go GMO-free<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and look for other sustainable food labels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Offer plenty of plant-based choices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Serving many vegetarian and vegan options including whole, plant-based foods cut back on environmental damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Cut back on food packaging:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Serving food that produces minimal packaging waste or comes in recycled content packaging will be another good green initiative.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>ii) Use Energy Efficiently<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep<\/span><b> indoor temperatures moderate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not too hot or cold and always use a programmable thermostat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever possible, <\/span><b>use Energy Star appliances<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can find Energy Star furnaces, heating and cooling elements, hand dryers, washing machines, refrigerators, lighting, microwaves, exhaust fans, ceiling fans, ovens, dishwashers, and much more. Use<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy Star-compliant roofing material<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and windows that help block temperature extremes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If<\/span><b> renovating or building use quality, energy-efficient insulation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, duct sealing, and weatherstripping, plus make sure there are plenty of windows to allow daylight in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Install a <\/span><b>high-efficiency water heater<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use <\/span><b>energy-efficient lighting.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider installin<\/span><b>g occupancy sensors for lighting i<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n various rooms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out <\/span><b>Energy Star qualified food holding cabinets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform <\/span><b>regular upkeep on all appliances i<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ncluding cooking equipment and place new gaskets on refrigeration units when needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Plug all your office equipment into one power strip <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that can be easily turned on and off.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For further energy savings, look into <\/span><b>on-site renewable energy options<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like solar panels, geothermal, solar water heater, solar exhaust etc<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>iii) Practice Water Efficiency and Conservation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s a lot that restaurants can do to increase water efficiency and conserve the water resources such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Install<\/span><b> low-flow faucets in the kitchen and bathrooms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Consider on-demand, touchless sensor faucets as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use <\/span><b>plants that require less water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the landscape.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set up<\/span><b> water catchments <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and reuse system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use<\/span><b> Energy Star qualified kitchen appliances<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like dishwashers, ice makers, and steamers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Install <\/span><b>dual flush handle toilets or high-efficiency toilets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and waterless urinals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a<\/span><b> linen service that&#8217;s qualified as water-saving<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or wash linens in-house with an Energy Star qualified washing machine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>iv) Reduce Waste<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Compost leftover food.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you don&#8217;t grow any of your own food and have no outside area, donate your compost over to a local community garden.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Serve proper servings <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which will r<\/span><b>esult in less food wastage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Donate leftover food to local shelters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Go paperless by taking online reservations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, keeping customer info on the computer, creating paperless billing for all vendors and employees, and paying your bills online.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you <\/span><b>renovate or redecorate, recycle or donate old items<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>restrooms use real towels instead of paper towels <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or air hand dryers. Use refillable reusable soap containers with bulk, natural hand soap.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always <\/span><b>print on both sides of the recycled content paper<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and reuse or recycle the ink cartridges you use in your printers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try easy steps like<\/span><b> staple-free staplers, reusable coasters, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reusable menus, reusable coffee, and tea filters, and sign up for junk mail reduction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>v) Donate Surplus Food<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every environmentally friendly restaurant has a food pantry on speed dial. Even after putting food waste controls in place, you\u2019ll still end up with surplus inventory on occasion. <\/span><b>Donating usable food ensures none of it goes to waste.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s also a great way to gain positive press for your restaurant.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>vi) Green Your Cleaning Routine<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conventional cleaning products are bad for the environment. The harsh chemicals in industrial cleaners don\u2019t break down and pollute the air and water table. To be an environmentally friendly restaurant,<\/span><b> swap out conventional cleaners with eco-friendly brands.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Reduce, Reuse, Recycle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By reducing waste, reusing containers, and recycling materials, the restaurant business can make huge strides when it comes to sustainability.
